Claire...

"What can you possibly learn from her?  How to pine artistically?  Twenty-seven names for tears?"
"Take my advice, stay away from broken people."

  1. Below, you will see posts for each of the mother-figures we meet in the film as well as Astrid herself. You write a blog post for Astrid and two of the mother-figures (three total). For each post, share your thoughts on the character and what you think they demonstrate about femininity, identity, and/or motherhood.

Claire so far has been the best mother for Astrid, aside from her true mother. She provides the best living environment and is able to provide for her economically too. Claire's husband creates more of a hostile environment however. When he's gone it is peaceful, but Claire of course is worrying about him having an affair with someone. When he's home on the other hand, they're most likely arguing, which visibly disturbs Astrid. As an actor, Claire is probably unable to really be her true self, which could be not good for what Astrid has learned from her mother. Ingrid's ideas and Claire's ideas do clash a little bit.

  2. Claire I feel was the best mother figure. She was weak, but she took care of Astrid better than any of her other mothers. I think she just had so much love to give since her husband was never there and she couldn't have any children, so she was able to give Astrid what she needed. I also think that for that reason, Astrid felt closest with Claire that with any of the other mothers.

  3. Claire was very different from the other mothers. She showed Astrid love and kindness. She was very different from Astrid's real mother because she showed Astrid love which her real mother did not. Out of all the foster mothers, Astrid really enjoyed her time with her and learned all about expressing emotions and caring for someone. She demonstrated stability for Astrid because she was a real home for Astrid. Claire demonstrated how fragile and sensitive a woman can be but at the same time how selfish they can also be. She relied on her husband too much but she hurt herself instead of him. She left Astrid alone when Astrid needed her because Claire felt alone without her husband and put that into consideration instead of Astrid's feelings.

  5. Claire was a great mother figure for Astrid. She was able to bond with her very quickly. Claire showed Astrid what love is. Astrid was able to comfort Claire when it came to her husband because, she had to do it for her real mother. Claire constantly said how proud she was of Astrid and encouraged her. She didn't put any negative things in her head like her real mother. I believe she was the best mother figure for Astride. Unfortunately Claire killed her self because she couldn't deal with being alone and she let Astrid down.

  6. Claire is definitely the nicest of Astrid's hosts and she seems to form the best relationship with Astrid out of any of her hosts. Claire is nice and is able to easily get along with Astrid and share her interests with her. However Claire is one of the "weaker" women who is shown in the film. She seems reliant on her husband and stresses over him when he is gone, and I think that these qualities is what causes the clash between her and Ingrid.

  7. Ingrid, Astrid's mother, doesn't want Astrid to be raised by someone who has an "easy life," like Claire, who is an actress and has a huge house with a pool and lots of wealth. Ingrid wants Astrid to have a hard life so she can have those experiences that she learns lessons from.

Ingrid is jealous of Claire. She wants Astrid to "stay away from broken people" because Claire is broken. Ingrid told Astrid she just got adopted to be suicide watch. She gives her that advice because of her past experiences. Astrid's father left Ingrid and Ingrid was completely head over heels for him. Ingrid loved him. Where Astrid ended up was a result of her mother's brokenness.

  8. Claire was the best mother figure for Astrid. No matter how broken she was, she showed Astrid what it was like to be truly loved and cared for. She showed Astrid how a mother was meant to care for her child even if they weren't biological. Claire did have many struggles in her life, but she never stopped loving Astrid because of them. Although Claire did take her own life after her husband left her, leaving Astrid alone, I believe she knew that she would not be able to give Astrid the life she deserved and she wouldn't be able to take care of Astrid like before. I'm not saying that abandoning Astrid was the right thing to do, I'm just saying that I believe Claire loved Astrid too much to she her struggle in life because she couldn't care for her.

  9. I think Claire is the definition of a perfect mother to Astrid. She’s beautiful, offers her the world, and most importantly loves her. Despite Astrid’s 15 year old mind of what makes a person perfect, everyone has their faults and weaknesses. Claire was her own weakness. She let the power of words, by her husband and Ingrid, seep into her soul and slowly destroy her. When it was too much, again the weakness of herself gave her the ability to kill herself. As a mother figure to Astrid I think this was a huge fault. Claire showed Astrid that sacrificing love for your self worth is ok. She allowed her husband to break her down, she allowed Ingrid to break her down, and she allowed the film industry to break her down. The one other important thing that Claire showed Astrid who to do is set standards for herself on how others should treat her. Right after Claire killed herself Astrid told her mother she will no longer be coming to visit her. Why would she continue to allow someone that makes her feel so bad continue to poison her life? And this is one of the best things that Astrid could have learned from Claire.

  10. Claire definitely showed the most love towards astrid and made her believe that she could have a new life with her and her husband. But Claire in general doesn’t just want a kid to love, she wants a kid to force her husband to stay and start a family. That's why when Claire was arguing with her husband he said, “you said if we got another kid you wouldn’t be like this.” She craves more attention and affection than Astrid does and that's why Astrid felt comfort in her because Claire needed someone to be there, and Astrid could feel how much Claire needed her. She was selfish though and in no way a real mother figure to Astrid since she chose to leave her instead of trying to take care of her as a mother. She chose death over Astrid because she wasn’t strong enough to live without love. Astrid's mother was right, she was weak and the only thing Astrid would learn with Claire is how not to react when your relationships over. Claire would have changed and became bitter and mean to Astrid by taking out the anger she had on her husband out on Astrid if she stayed alive.

  13. Unlike the other mothers and even Ingrid, Claire was different because she was kind to Astrid and showed Astrid how to love. In addition, Astrid was different too because Astrid enjoyed her time with Claire unlike the other foster mothers that the audience gets to know later on in the film. Another difference between Ingrid and Claire is that Claire showed Astrid a woman can sometimes be fragile as well as being selfish. Astrid saw through her mother how strong a woman was supposed to be, but also saw how selfish she was because she referred to Astris as a belonging. On the other hand, not only did Claire show how fragile she can be, but also showed how selfish she can also be. Claire always relied on her husband too much and was even willing to leave Astrid whom she deeply cared for. Claire showed Astrid love, care, and selfishness by considering her feelings over Astrid's feeling.

  14. Claire was different from all the other mothers because she loved Astrid no matter what and treated her kindly and respectfully unlike any if the other mothers besides maybe Ingrid in the end. She always showed love for her and just tell that Claire and Astrid connected and Claire thought of Astrid as her daughter. Even when her and her husband were fighting about Astrid Claire seemed to defend her even when she did love her husband and Astrid isn't her real daughter. But Claire did say she would give Astrid up if her husband stayed home with her. Even after the fight and her husband left for work Claire and Astrid still seemed to love each other and have a connection like a mother and a daughter should. But Claire was just too weak and couldn’t handle not being loved which left Astrid alone again.

  15. Although Claire’s time as Astrid’s foster mother was tragically shortened, her presence granted Astrid one of the most important learning experiences she would receive throughout the film. Unlike Astrid’s biological mother Ingrid who taught her that she was to trust no one, Claire being such an open and caring person, showed her what it was like to truly share a motherly bond. What clung Astrid to Claire was the fact that she gave her the utmost attention, which was something her own mother never gave.

  19. Claire was the best loving mother that astrid had received. She was taught how to love and feel loved. Claire also needed astrid too, she was always alone when her husband would go on his trips. She's not as strong as a mother like ingrid but she shows the caring and loving side of being a mother. But she also weak because having the thought that her husband is cheating on her and that he's leaving her, so she's willing to send astrid away. It was sad when she took her own life because she was a broken person she wasn't strong enough to handle whats coming to her. This made astrid not to hurt anyone that she loves after when claire died, thats why she ignored Paul when she got back. Claire wasn't the strongest mother for astrid but she taught astrid things that ingrid never did.
