Ingrid (Astrid's Mother)...

"Loneliness is the the human condition.  No one will ever fill that space.  The most you can do is try to know yourself."

"Love is temperamental. Tiring. It makes demands. Love uses you. Changes its mind..... But hatred, now. That's something you can use. Sculpt. Wield. It's hard or soft, however you need it. Love humiliates you, but hatred cradles you."

  1. For each post, share your thoughts on the character and what you think they demonstrate about femininity, identity, and/or motherhood.
Ingrid is one of the more spiritual characters in the film. She is always giving Astrid powerful information on how to live the lifestyle that Ingrid believes is right. Ingrid's femininity comes in to play also when she finds out her lover is also seeing someone else. She reacts by breaking into his house and deleting all of his important files, including a novel that he recently wrote. One day the authorities came to Ingrid's house and take her away to jail. In jail her identity complete changed as she became more exposed to reality. This affected her relationship with Astrid and her motherhood was revealed as she became somewhat jealous that her daughter was being raised by another women.

  2. Ingrid is a very overpowering mother figure. She seems to want her daughter to think just like her, and speaks badly of the women who become mother figures for Astrid. Ingrid even put Astrid down in a very judgemental tone when she spoke about the men in her daughters life. She preaches how Astrid should be able to live freely without anyone casting a shadow over her, but she herself is the shadow. She judges Astrid's decisions but she didn't set a good example. She wants her daughter to be careful about men who give her the slightest bit of attention, after she broke her rules about trusting a man, and then killed him. I think Ingrid knows exactly who she is, but she wants Astrid to be her mini me and that makes her a bad mother figure.

  3. Ingrid is a powerful character in this film. She wants the best for Astred. She seems to want her to be just like her. Ingrid starts to show her feminine side when she acts out because her boyfriend cheated on her. In jail reality hits her. When she starts to see Astred happy her relatioship starts to change. Once Astred knows what it feels to be loved . Her mother starts to get jealous and effects her relationship with Claire , because she did that her mother was not looking out for her best interest. As a mother your suppose to set a good example and guide them in the right direction.

  4. Ingrid is a very powerful character in this movie. She is a manipulative, selfish mother who only cares about Astrid following in her footsteps. She's selfish because she doesn't ever think of how her actions would affect Astrid. Besides the fact that murder is a crime, she left Astrid by herself, forcing her to go into foster care. Ingrid also manipulates everyone around her and around Astrid. She's just jealous when Astrid has another mother figure in her life. She also puts Astrid down every time she has any bit of happiness. All she wants is Astrid to be just like her. But why? She committed murder and is clearly not a good mother figure. She should be pushing Astrid to be the best she can be and have a fulfilling, successful, happy life. Instead she just wants her to manipulate and be just like her.

  6. Ingrid is a very different type of “motherly” character than the others in the movie. There’s no doubt in my mind that Ingrid loves Astrid, even after all what Ingrid put Astrid through. Although this love is displayed at the end when she is being taken away in handcuffs, the most compelling trait about Ingrid is her mind. Ingrid is not as stupid as some may make her out to be, yes she was caught and convicted of murder, but some of the things she says and does are quite bright. Never do you see Ingrid once cry, she’s a very strong woman who can completely survive on her own. She also uses lies to manipulate Astrid and make it seem everyone else is the enemy and that the only person who really cares is her. This game Ingrid played worked throughout the whole movie, it fooled clair and it fooled Astrid. This worked until the end, instead of Astrid giving into her mother’s demands to testify, she completely obliterated her mother’s motto, “everyone is the enemy” by replying that “we are the enemy. ” Yes, Ingrid is an evil person, but she gave her life to let Astrid be free.

  7. Ingrid clearly did not act like the typical mother to Astrid and rarely gave her the attention or affection she needed. She continuously focused on herself and what would benefit her own interests instead of caring for her child. She preached to her daughter about being an independent woman and standing up for herself, yet was a hypocrite as she acted in the opposite. Ingrid was insecure about her identity and would do anything for men which led to her becoming angry when they didn’t treat her the same way back. Also, she left her daughter, for a year, for a guy instead of being independent and raising her child by herself from the start. Maintaining femininity and not letting others take advantage of her was Ingrid’s main goal, yet clearly she couldn’t achieve it as she let others cause her to become angry and dictate her future.

  8. Initially, the audience knows very little about Ingrid’s backstory, but as the movie goes on more is revealed. All her anger towards men and wanting independence can be traced to back to her broken heart. When Astrid was born, Ingrid saw her as a dead weight on her life because Ingrid saw the world as a place to explore. However, when Ingrid returns to Astrid later on, she condemns herself to isolation out of a fear of being hurt again by another man. This explains her reaction to Barry cheating on her because she was finally climbing out of her shell and then she got crushed again by another man. Ingrid’s views on love stem from her pain that she received in her previous relationships so she tries to protect Astrid from ever having to suffer the pain she did. What she doesn’t realize, however, is that by shielding Astrid from pain she also shielded her from love.

  11. Ingrid is selfish. This is how I would describe how she is as a mother, her femininity, and her identity. She dropped Astrid off at a neighbors house and left her for dead because she wanted a moment to herself. She doesn't care for other people’s needs or wants. When Astrid finally seemed happy with Claire, she felt threatened and destroyed something in her daughters life that made her feel happy. She didn't give Astrid the opportunity to meet or have her father in her life, because of resentment Ingrid had towards him.

Ingrid constantly repeats the the message to Astrid that their beauty is their power. When Ingrid goes in to have sex with the writer, Astrid practices in the mirror rejecting men as if that is what she was made for. Her mother put in her head that being beautiful is how you control people.

  12. Astrid's mother, Ingrid is a very beautiful but poisonous women. She’s that women who all the men lust for even though they know she's treacherous and that they should proceed with caution. Her beauty is one of her power but also her weakness because she constantly had guy trouble and judging by the way she reacted to her current boyfriend, she doesn’t deal with those problems very nicely. She has been hurt so many times which makes sense why her guard is so up and she doesn’t like to open up or put her trust in any person other than her daughter. The toxic relationships her mother had affected Astrid and how she sees people not just guys. Her mother taught her to be independent and to not care about anyone because it just leads to disappointment and this makes Astrid believe she's poisonous and that she infects people just like her mother. She stays away from being taken from a good family, and she changes her mind about the one boy who truly cares about her. When Ingrid get hurt she wants everyone to feel her pain while Astrid sees pain and tries to prevent spreading it so it can’t hurt others.

  13. Ingrid is a very powerful character in the movie and gives Astrid all these powerful messages and is trying to mold Astrid to be who she always wanted to be. Ingrid always acted like a strong character in the movie but once she killed her boyfriend for cheating on her you could see she was becoming weak. She was breaking all her own rules about boys and everything and all Ingrid was doing after being put in jail was driving Astrid away. But Ingrid letting Astrid go was the best thing she could ever do for Astrid.

  14. Ingrid is somewhat of a poser. To actually be strong you must admit that you have been weak at points and she failed to do that. She isn't very far off from Claire or Starr because they have all devoted their lives to a man at some point and they've used Astrid to pretend that it is past them. The truth is is that Ingrid is weak but she hides it the best. She needs constant superiority over her own daughter to feel strong. She told Astrid to be independent but only taught her to have a mind like herself. When she decides to take on the responsibility and let Astrid go is when she finally is the powerful women that she was pretending to be. She realized that she had been putting herself over her daughter all this time and wanted to somehow make it right. That was the first time that Ingrid actually acted like a mother and sacrificed herself for her child to feel free.

  15. Ingrid is a bold and strong character in this film but she isn't the best motherly character. I feel where she gets her strength more is from being a single mother and having to take care of astrid on her own. But what she doesn't realize where she got her real strength was from astrid. Her goal as a mother was to teach her to be like her and saying everyone is weak but them. But the movie makes it clear that ingrid has been the weak one and that astrid was giving her strength. So instead of telling her the wrong things to do because she has made the same mistakes, but to finally stand up and be a real mother.
